TiK ToK From RCA Records Label

Customer Reviews

She's got diamonds on the soles of her feet, and dollar signs in her eyes
Ke$ha's monetary moniker is fitting. She's in it for the cash, some brief fame--she's the hardy partying equivalent to Taylor Swift, she eerily resembles Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical (Encore Edition) and her sound is the blander version of Lady GaGa. Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" is NOT named for the Oz character. While the chorus is guilty pleasure bubblegum pop with loads of auto-tune, the song itself is forgettable and repetitive. It does work for a throbbing night club, but beyond that--it's dull. "Tik Tok" will put you to sleep. In fact, her music video for this song so much echoes Lady GaGa's Just Dance that it opens with her in a bathtub. Yes,this is Lady GaGa's High School Musical equivalent.

So terrible.
I honestly do not get why this song is so popular. She can't sing at all, the lyrics are beyond inane, the vocoder is irritating. Everything about it is grating and horrible. If this is the future of music, I'm going to stop listening to the radio now. I can't imagine anything worse than this. Whoever signed her to a record label should be covering their face in shame and embarrassment.

some catchy hooks but it's still terrible
My wife made me download this song, complaining that I don't have enough "new" music (I'm a classic rock fan - Floyd, Zeppelin, etc.) This is just another classic example of why current music is in the toilet. The song has a few catchy hooks, but the vocals are weak, the lyrics inane, and the singer appears to be someone they dragged off of a pole at the Cheetah Club and forced to record a song.

Thank God I was a child of the 70's and was exposed to decent music. This song makes me weep for the future. Kids, please go buy a copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Abbey Road" instead of this.

Save Me, San Francisco From Columbia

Customer Reviews

Love This Album!!
Train is back! This record really captures a great mix of their old sounds AND new styles. Songs like "Breakfast in Bed", "Marry Me" and "You Already Know" really give off the old 'Train' CD vibe and then those like "I Got You" and "Brick By Brick" show more of the 'My Private Nation' and 'For Me, It's You' sound. There are a few tracks that sound similar to Pat's solo record but that doesn't mean that those songs aren't memorable! Overall. I was very pleased listening to the new one and after a 3 year gap, this is a very redeemable disc that should put Train back on the map! 5 stars!

Best album since Drops of Jupiter
Don't get me wrong, I love all of Train's albums. Maybe a few more than others. There were some great songs on the past two, My Private Nation and For Me It's You, but I felt like both albums were over-produced and lacked that unique sound that was so amazing on the first two albums. Their debut album and Drops of Jupiter had, for lack of a better term, a REAL feel. As if to say "Yeah, we're singing about this really deep stuff, but we're singing about it in a way you can really relate to." Save Me San Francisco returns us to that frame of reference. The songs are witty, sometimes fun and sometimes moving (and sometimes both), and Monahan's vocal performance is more incredible than ever. A few of my personal favorites are "Parachute", "This Ain't Goodbye", and "Marry Me". "I Got You" has a rockin mash-up of The Doobie Brothers' "Black Water". The first single, "Hey, Soul Sister" is more for the mainstream radio audience, but still enjoyable. Conclusion: True Train fans are going to be pleasantly surprised! I will be listening to this non-stop for the next few months.

Modern poetry that rocks!!
Train is definitely back; Save Me, San Francisco is amazing and showcases Patrick Monahan's amazing, distinctive voice! Love the energy and heartfelt lyrics including the title track, Soul Sister and Marry Me! Can't wait to see these guys again live!!!

Lady A Does It Again!
Normally the idea of a ballad being a kick off to a new CD is not what I am used to sure some singers do it and it does really well point in case this song. Lady Antebellum really shows that there still going strong with this kick off to their new CD due out next year. Hillary Scott & Charles Kelly who sing the main leads on this song are a dream duo and their vocals really shine on this their harmonies are fantastic. It's a song of a love lost and with a chorus like this:

It's a quarter after I'm all alone I need you now,
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control but I need you now
And I don't know how I could do without but I need you now

You really can't go wrong it really sums up the whole song.

Overall and in my opinion Lady A is back and better than ever if you liked their first CD you won't be disappointed with this song at all.

Blown Away By This Song
I had heard the name Lady Antebellum and had heard a song here and there. Thought they were okay, but nothing that really captured my attention. That was until this past week when I was listing to the top 100 songs at a download site.

And wow, just wow!

I was blown away by this song. From its simple piano opening to its simple straightforward lyrics, the song just conveys an amazing amount of passion and longing. And the guy who sings the lead has an awesome voice. I look forward to discovering more about this group.

Amazing Song
I liked Lady Antebellum until I heard this song. I love this song! It is now of my favorite songs. A great country ballad. If you are not looking for a longing love song it might not be for you, although I wasn't when I first heard it.

Nothing But The Best [The Frank Sinatra Collection] From Frank Sinatra Enterprises

Customer Reviews

A Superb If Incomplete Introduction To The Reprise Years.
I'll be honest. When I first heard about this cd through The Sinatra Family Forums back in February, I was ready to tear it to shreds. I thought to myself, "Frank's gone 10 years now, and they're marking the event with yet another compilation with same songs repackaged for the umpteenth time?" Even when it was announced that the songs were to be digitally remastered and a never before released bonus track was to be included, my anger and resentment towards this compilation still stuck.

However, as the release date grew nearer and I got word from several people who were able to hear it before it officially hit the market told me it was totally worth it, I slowly warmed up to it and by last week was all set on buying it.

When I received the cd this afternoon, I was extremely excited, even though I thought myself, "I heard these songs thousands of time before." The first thing that struck me was how beautiful the packaging was: the cd comes in a cardboard case with one of the best pictures of Frank ever taken. The cd's booklet is made from a elegant, smooth velvet like material and the liner notes by Charles Pignone as well as the various rare photos of Frank at work are excellent. Honestly, the packaging alone is enough to grab your attention.

But enough about the artwork. What about the music?

As stated already, my biggest concern with this collection was that I heard all these songs before. I had already received the mammoth "Complete Reprise Studio Recordings" boxed set, which had all these songs (except one) as well as over 400 additional tracks, all of which featured more than satisfactory sound quality. Still, undaunted, I popped the cd onto my Ipod and went for a listen.

Needless to say, I was blown away.

The sound quality is INCREDIBLE. To hear the opening notes of "Come Fly With Me" bristle with sharpness and clarity is in itself a major thrill, and to hear Frank's voice with such depth and range only adds to the fun.
Seriously, there were parts of certain songs I never noticed before. Listen to how beautiful the harp sounds on "Bewitched" (remastered from the original 35MM tapes) or how sharp and clear Count Basie's classic piano ticklings on the intro to "The Best Is Yet To Come" sound, or how fresh and powerful the horns on "New York, New York" blaze through the speakers. Sonically, the album is as close to flawless as humanly possible.

Furthermore, knowing that many fans would be concerned with the whole "I've heard these songs before" stigma, the producers included several little bonuses on certain songs to surprise faithful listeners:

(WARNING: If you don't me to spoil these surprises, skip this section!)

-The tag on "Come Fly With Me" has been changed from "And don't tell your momma" to another line from an alternate take, "Pack a small bag."
-Though sources say otherwise , "The Best Is Yet To Come" seems to be a different mix (possibly spliced together from another take). Listen to how Frank phrases "Come the day you're mine" on the bridge, it's different from previous releases.
-"Strangers In The Night" is extended, with a few more "Do be do be do's."

But the real surprise, however, is the never before released track. "Body And Soul," an old standad Frank first recored for Columbia in 1947, dates back to the "L.A. Is My Lady" sessions in 1984 with Quincy Jones. For whatever reason, Frank was dissatisfied with the initial take on the song, and left it off the album.

24 years later, however, Frank Sinatra Jr. dusted off Frank's vocal track, removed Jones' arrangement, and instead recorded a new orchestral backing that fits the song beautifully. Listening to this new majestic chart for the song, you'd never guess it was initially planned for the overly produced "L.A. Is My Lady" (a potential masterpiece marred by too many slick, 1980s' style production values). It sounds like it was supposed to be on "Sinatra & Strings."

And if the orchestration isn't enough, what about The Man himself? Here's Frank, in the autumn of his years, still better than anyone around, punching out a timeless stanard with the same passion and fury that permeated through his most beloved recordings. It is a truly tour de force performance that was worth the wait.

For all the pros for "Nothing But The Best," there are, however a few cons. My main gripe, and it might be asking for a bit too much, is that it could've been two discs. There are a lot of Frank's best recordings from the Reprise era missing, such as "In The Still Of The Night," "The Coffee Song," "You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loes You," "Come Rain Or Come Shine," (or anything from "Sinatra & Strings," which is undeservedly snubbed), "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Ol' Man River," (arguably his best recording ever), "I Have Dreamed," "Soliloquy," "All Or Nothing At All," (either the 1961 ballad rendition or the thrilling 1966 swing version would have sufficed) and many others could've been included, to give the cd a bit more diversity instead of the typical hits. Also, while they were arguably done better in their initial Capitol incarnations, his redoings of "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "All The Way," "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning," "How Little We Know," and others are still excellent renditions and are worth including.

But in the end, this nitpicking adds little. The fact of the matter "Nothing But The Best" is still an excellent compilation with unbeatable sound with 22 songs ung by the greatest singer popular music has ever heard.

Several tracks contain some seriously misguided remixing attempts
I'm really surprised at all the five star reviews posted here and especially taken aback at the raves about the sound quality. I was looking forward to this disc because Sinatra's Reprise catalog has never sounded as good as it should on CD and once I saw the track listing for this disc, and assumed that it would be mastered properly, I knew it was something I wanted to buy the day it hit the shelves. A lot of the tracks do sound better than ever and the most glorious example of sonic improvement is on "Summer Wind". It's obvious that some tweaking was done on this stereo mix to improve the sound and this track really does sound incredible! But some of the remixing (which I'm assuming was done by going back to the original master tapes and making some recording soundboard adjustments) is far from an improvement to my ears. While I'm happy to have the extended fade on "Strangers In The Night", the way the tambourine has been buried in the mix makes it sound like something's missing. And holy Manhattan, what the frank happened to "New York, New York"? It sounds terrible! You can hardly tell that there was a drummer present at the recording session at all! After Frank's "A-number one" line and before the track's tempo slows and he sings, "These little town blues...", there's supposed to be a snare roll. I can't hear it at all. Why would they ruin this song by covering up the entire drum track?? It makes no sense. The power and driving energy of the arrangement has been zapped and it sounds like just another cover of an overplayed showtune (albeit one with an outstanding vocal!) So while overall this disc contains a great song selection and should be a no-brainer 5 star release, I think it's shortcomings barely qualify it for 3 stars.

certainly not all of Frank's best--but it's still all right by me !!!
Nothing But The Best is a Frank Sinatra album of just some of his best; this really can't be called a "best of" album because it has a mere twenty-two songs on it--and The Chairman certainly had more than twenty-two hits on any of his record labels! However, Frank's fans will love this album anyway; it does contain a few extra seconds here and there to capture Frank's comments. There is a very fine USPS commemorative stamp and, just as they say, there's a previously unissued rendition of "Body And Soul."

The CD starts off with Frank Sinatra performing "Come Fly With Me." "Come Fly With Me" is the perfect upbeat start to this album; and Frank's voice is in excellent form. The big band style arrangement works well for this number and it whets your appetite for more--great! Similarly, "The Way You Look Tonight" has Frank again singing at his best with a more mature voice; but yet he uses this opportunity to showcase the magnificent qualities of his voice. Frank's excellent diction and his uncanny sense of timing enhance his singing even more.

Frank gives "The Good Life" a very fine treatment and the music that accompanies him is very pretty but they never drown out Frank as he sings this very well. "The Girl From Ipanema" retains its usually bossa nova treatment but when Frank sings this you'll swear nobody could ever have sung this as well as Frank did! Frank takes ballads and puts his own stamp on them with his sublime interpretations of them; and this impresses me greatly.

"Strangers In The Night" sounds fresh and new when Frank sings this so very well; and the strings are used to great advantage. I love it! "Call Me Irresponsible" shines equally bright when Frank performs this with sensitivity; his voice remains in excellent form and it's truly a pleasure to hear him sing.

"That's Life" is actually one of my personal favorites on this CD (believe it or not); and Frank sings this with passion and all his might. The chorus that backs up Frank enhances the beauty of the number even further. Of course, "My Way" is a classic Sinatra tune; and I always love it when I hear Frank sing this. "My Way" is easily a major highlight of this album and I predict you'll enjoy this version of "My Way," too.

The theme from New York, New York gets the royal treatment from Frank Sinatra--he was born to sing songs like this! WOW! The CD also ends nicely with Frank Sinatra performing "Body And Soul;" this previously unissued interpretation of this ballad is worth the price of admission alone!

Sure, this CD contains just some of Frank's best from his later years; but I have a feeling many of his fans may want this after all. This is also a possible starter CD for newcomers to Frank's artistry and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will enjoy this as well.

American VI: Ain't No Grave From American Recordings / Lost Highway Records

Customer Reviews

A moving swan song!
"American VI: Ain't no grave" is the final in the Rick Rubin produced "American" series of CDs by Johnny Cash. Like its predecessors, it comprises pared-back covers, as well as (in this case), an original (and purpotedly final) composition by Cash.

"I Corinthians 15:55" is the lone original with lyrics looking at his mortality and the hope of seeing his Redeemer. Mortality, love, redemption, and spirituality colour the 10 songs on this beautiful CD, and I must say, for what supposedly comprises his last recordings, he sounds a lot stronger than he did on songs like "If you could read my mind" (from "American V"), or "Bridge over troubled water" ("American IV), where he was slightly reedy.

"Redemption day" (a Sheryl Crow composition) is a beautiful acoustic ballad that wouldn't sound out of place in a Western movie, with Cash singing about the "train that's heading straight to heaven's gate", while "For the good times" (a Kris Kristofferson composition) is a heartbreaking farewell to his lover as they part and he reminisces the good times they shared.

"Can't help but wonder where I'm bound" touches on his journey on earth and his curiousity over his final destination. The solemn "Last night I had the strangest dream" finds him dreaming of a world with no more war, against a richer musical backdrop than the other songs.

Highlight, in my opinion" is "Ain't no grave", his fearless and defiant proclamation that no grave can hold his body down when he hears the trumpet sound, and his looking forward to meeting Jesus, his mother and father. Chiming bell sounds, Soft guitars and banjo set to shuffling shackled-footstep sounds which provide the gentle beat to this stirring song.

As with the previous discs in the series, Cash inhabits and makes each song his own. It is obvious he knew his sojourn here was done and the songs reflect his strong belief of a life well lived and being reunited with loved ones on the other side of eternity. A masterpiece!

Contemplation Of Death
Johnny Cash is forever with us, in spirit and in his music. The sixth volume of the Americana is a reminder of his greatness.

During the last few years of Johnny Cash's life he spent much of his time recording songs that meant a great deal to him. We know from his daughter, Rosanne Cash's recent CD, that her father loved the old time folk/gospel songs. This CD brings us the uplifting, redeeming qualities that may have been in Johnny Cash's mind as he sang the songs he loved. This is a gruff old voice, but the meaning of his life surrounds us.

Rick Rubin produced this CD, as he has all of the Americana series. There are ten songs on this CD that bring the face of death before us. And, at the same time, we are privy to a forgiving spirit that has seen it all.

'Ain't No Grave' is so perfect, as it opens up the view of the spirit that grows as the CD proceeds. Nothing is going
to keep him down.

'Redemption Day' is a Sheryl Crow song that had an anti-war stance, but with Johnny Cash it is a song sorrow and love for all- merciful.

'For The Good Times' an old Kris Kristofferson tune, is my favorite- an old hand, giving a tip of the hat to the times of yore when things were good. A sentimental favorite that we all can relate to.

'Corinthians'- 'death where is thy sting'- looking forward to seeing those gone before.

'Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound' a Tom Paxton tune, wandering and wondering what he was meant to be. A look back and forward to whatever is coming.

'Satisfied Mind'-everything that has gone before is done and done-some regrets but not many- 'believe there is no doubt;- he leaves this old world with a satisfied mind'.

'I Don't Hurt Anymore'- an old folk/western song- all hurts are forgotten and forgiven. Loves lost and new ones found.

'Cool Water'- was this not an old Frankie Lane song- we can feel the parched throat and the release with that cool water.
'Dan can't you see that green tree with water running free for you and me'. Love this tune.

'Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream'-there was no war, no strife, no poor, no more war ever. The people were dancing round and round, guns and swords were scattered all around'. All life's woes are solved and it is time to rejoice.
.
'Aloha Oe-Aloha Oe Queen Lili'uokalani's Hawaiian goodbye: 'Until we meet again'

Johnny Cash has given us his peace of mind that carries on. He wishes for peace and love while he faced his mortality.
Over the years, Johnny Cash always sang the tunes that were right for him at that moment, in his death, he continues.

Aloha Oe, Johnny Cash

The Essential Johnny Cash

American IV: The Man Comes Around

American VI: Ain't No Grave - RIP Johnny
I bought the MP3 album today, and have listened through a couple times. The "final" (we will see?) American Recordings release from The Man in Black feels a little short with 10 tracks, and only a couple of tracks that struck me as 5 star. My picks were the title track Ain't No Grave, and the final track Aloha Oe was a fitting final song that almost brought a tear listening to Johnny sing it, but I manned up and fought it back. I also liked Redemption Day, I Corinthians 15:55, I Don't Hurt Anymore, and Cool Water and would rate those 4 stars. The remaining 4 tracks were a 3 in my opinion. Overall a 4 star offering, I wished for a little more. RIP Johnny, I'm looking forward to meeting you on the other side.

Celtic Memories Sampler From Madacy Special Products

Customer Reviews

Can't beat the price when its free
These are very traditional songs and are generally well done. Individual tracks for me ranged from good to excellent. It was a nice bit of nostalgia for me.

Slow & sweet - 101 Strings style
Audio quality is very good, with a wide ambiance like a symphony feel.

The tracks have a 101 Strings quality and might be all from that group, though the tracks give credit to the singers in preference to the musicians. Or they may have been selected for the similar stylings. The lyrics are clear, easy to understand, and well sung. The general tone is lyrical and sweet, with long-held notes. Several tracks also have a harp - a nice touch. While I don't, personally, care that much for the 'saccharine' quality of 101 Strings, or the rather slow tempo of all these tracks, others may prefer this sound to the 'bouncier' tunes with a more intimate and 'bluegrassy' feel that I like more, such as those of the Celtic Sampler Summer 2009 (which the insert a link doesn't find, more's the pity).

Track by track:
1. Full instrumental, aka Danny Boy, full string orchestra, slow tempo.
2. Some Celtic and then English. "with lightsome heart, I pulled a rose full sweet upon the thorny tree" (in case you know those lyrics).
3. I plan to keep this track a while as it is the "I'll take the high road, and you'll take the low road" song, and I've always wanted to learn more than just those lines.
4. I think everyone knows this song by this title.
5. I learned this one from Joan Baez many years ago, and I like her rendition far better - but that's my taste, not a reflection on the quality of this track.
6. "Cockles and mussels, alive alive-O" with backing chorus as well. Waltz almost fast enough to dance to.
7. Flute, violin, harp, strings. Slow & dreamy with 'surprise' percussive moments.
8. Almost 'bouncy' acapella (nearly - a touch of backing guitar/banjo) - may not be 101 Strings - has a more 'intimate' feeling. "I wooed her in the wintertime, part of the summer too, and the only only thing that I did that was wrong was to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew."
9. Piano accompaniment, mainly. "I can see a soft moon shining on the water by the mill, and the silver ribbon winding by the house upon the hill."
10. Full strings plus harp & chimes. Wistful ballad. "smiling, beguiling... together oft over the mountains we strayed. With each other delighted..."

7,8,9&10 are more 'intimate' and, to me, more enjoyable than 1-6. Hope this helps you decide what to try.

Sampler is in fact, FREE.
Contrary to a previous review, this sampler is in fact FREE (at least at the time of this posting). Just click on the "Get mp3 Album" button. I do not usually rate samplers, especially when they are free. I welcome the opportunity to check out any type of music, especially when there is no cost involved. For that reason alone, this sampler gets five stars. If you like Celtic music, try it. There may be something here worth exploring further...what have you got to lose.

Classical Favorites Sampler From Madacy Special Products

Customer Reviews

Poor production / reproduction
I know this sampler is available free. However, I have to agree with an earlier review, the sound reproduction is terrible. It is unclear, muddy, muffled. The actual performance of the music itself is also poorly produced and there are much better (albeit paid) performances available. I appreciate the orchestra making this work available free for people to try out, I hope that it is not reflective of their best work. One star for the sampler and an additional star for the artists' good intentions of letting people try before they buy.

Poor Quality
All of the selections sound muted and muddied. They are of such poor quality that the pieces do not sound as the should. This is not even worth your time for the free download!

Lush and Lovely
What a wonderful surprise! This sampler has many favorites, most of which I'll bet you recognize when you hear them.
Great music for chillaxing , or playing in the background during dinner.
Enjoy! Thanks Amazon!

20 In 10: Digital Collection From Rock Ridge Music

Customer Reviews

Thank You, Sister Hazel and Amazon
This is a very good collection of tracks from four Sister Hazel albums. It is a good compilation for anyone who is a fan of their brand of folksy rock that includes upbeat numbers and more mellow ballads. On this collection, the tracks come from four Sister Hazel albums, as follows:

"Lift" (2004)
-- "Firefly"
-- "All About the Love"
-- "I Will Come Through"
-- "Hold On"

"Absolutely" (2006)
-- "Mandolin Moon"
-- "Hello, It's Me"
-- "Where Do You Go"
-- "Truth Is"
-- "One Time"
-- "Everything Else Disappears"

"Bam! Volume 1" (2007)
-- "Wrong the Right Way"
-- "Sail Away"
-- "Save Myself"
-- "Mona Lisa"
-- "What Kind of Living"
-- "Grand Canyon"
-- "Work in Progress"

"Release" (2009)
-- "Ghost in the Crowd"
-- "Vacation Rain"
-- "Walls and Cannonballs"

I really appreciate that this album is available for free. I don't know if that is a decision by the group or by Amazon, so I thank all of you. This is not the first time that a Sister Hazel has been offered at a great price or free, and when group members Ken Block and Drew Copeland released solo albums, they were also offered for free or very cheaply. (I recall at least one of those albums was also free for a while, though I don't remember which one, or if perhaps it was both.) It is apparent that Sister Hazel is very generous with their music, or they have a very ingenious marketing strategy!

20 In 10: A Must Have
20 In 10 is a great set of songs by Sister Hazel. There is not a bad song on this album. The album has a great mix of Sister Hazel's style of music, and well yes the 20 song set is free from Amazon MP3. Definately,a must have for your collection. Thanks,Amazon for a great deal on such a good album!

20 songs from Sister Hazel for FREE?! WOW!
I just downloaded this FREE Sister Hazel comp thanks to AMAZON!!! Always liked the band, but radio never gave them a fair shake. (When does radio give a band a fair shake? When thier consultants tell them to...) THANK YOU AMAZON!

Here comes junior
Wow, does Liam Finn ever sound like his dad. I wonder if that's how his voice comes out naturally or if he adopted it from hearing so much Crowded House while growing up.

Regardless, this is a not bad track. It is simplistic, but strong and over before you know it. It's inevitable to compare him to father Neil, so I'll just go ahead and do it: he doesn't quite have the John Lennon touch of dear old dad, but I say who cares. He's still pretty young, so there is room for improvement.

That said, I'm still curious to check out the EP from which this song comes. Let's hear it for free mp3s from Amazon.

Not bad for a free song.
I got to download this song for free for some reason - probably with a purchase of something. It's not bad.

Beatles-like with A Dash of 10,000 Maniacs
Nice moderate tempo song with light, pleasing harmony. Lead singer actually sounds like Julian Lennon. Lead guitar has slightly distorted sound and evokes memories of the late Rob Buck of 10,000 Maniacs. Recommended addition to your Easy Rock/Alternative library.
